Many people wonder if tuna is safe for cats. For years, cats in books, movies, and cartoons have been shown eating tuna as their main meal. Some people wouldn’t even question whether or not it’s actually safe to feed tuna. After all, there are tons of tuna-based cat foods out there! But just like any food intended for human consumption, there are some minor concerns when it comes to giving tuna to cats.

In short, yes; tuna is safe for cats to eat. Fish is an excellent source of protein and omega fatty acids, which keep your cat strong and healthy. But tuna should be fed as a treat, and therefore in moderation. Canned tuna sometimes contains salt and oil, which should be avoided if you’re a kitty. So make sure to feed canned tuna or tuna juice from fish that is kept in water with no salt added.

Remember that treats are great, but should be fed sparingly. Even feeding the right kind of tuna can lead to problems if too much is consumed. By eating too much tuna, cats can develop vitamin E deficiencies and yellow fat disease. When not enough vitamin E is consumed, fatty tissue will begin to build up and become inflamed, which is known as yellow fat disease. Not only does the decrease in vitamin E pose this problem, but the high amount of saturated fat found in tuna also contributes. Tuna is also high in mercury, and regular consumption also puts your cat at a higher risk of mercury poisoning. All fish contain mercury, but the largest fish often contain the most. Tuna is a very large fish that eats lots of other fish, causing the mercury levels in its body to go up very high.

When we look at the tuna-based cat foods on the market today, we don’t necessarily realize that they contain much less tuna than a full can intended for human consumption. Not only do the cat food versions have added vitamin E to prevent deficiencies, they contain other added vitamins and minerals that are essential for feline health.

That’s not to say that your cat should never get to enjoy some canned tuna here and there. The occasional can of tuna, or any tuna meat or juice added to your cat’s regular diet, won’t cause any harm. It’s a fun and easy way to treat your cat to a little something special. Just make sure not to make it a completely regular part of their diet, and certainly don’t ever try to make tuna your cat’s only source of food.
